What Inspired you to pursue acting?
Growing up, if a TV show or movie pulled me in, I didn’t just like it—I loved it. There’s a picture of a 16-year-old geek with glasses and bad bangs (read: me) next to the word “fangirl” in the dictionary. I would become so deeply invested in the storylines, the characters, their relationships and all the trivia in between. I marvelled at the actors who got to inhabit those worlds and live-out the stories that had the power to put butterflies in my stomach, crush my heart, spark a yearning for adventure or leave me gasping for air from laughter. I wanted to be part of the magic they created.
I didn’t do much acting back then – I built those worlds for myself as a writer first – but as I got older (and braver), I knew I had to pursue what my heart of hearts had always wanted. And it has been through growing up and embracing my identity that I’ve developed a better understanding of why I was so affected by those shows and movies I loved and why I have to act. When I sit in the dark of a movie theatre or at home a little too close to the TV, gripping the edge of my seat or laughing too loudly or ugly sobbing with abandon, for a moment I feel seen; I feel understood. If I can do that for others – especially the fangirls and the ones who look like me – it will undoubtedly be the greatest honour of my life.
What is your dream role?
Mindy Lahiri (The Mindy Project) or Eleanor Shellstrop (The Good Place). I love female characters who are self-assured leaders, hilarious, and a bit of a messy bench who loves drama. They remind us – and especially me – to be a little braver, a little bolder, and unapologetically authentic. But I’d infuse them with a bit of the dorkiness and heart from my own personality too. Oh, and I’m also readily available for the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians.
