What Inspired you to pursue acting?
Acting is one of my first loves. As a child, I loved to create my own shows or reenact my favourite ones with my siblings and/or friends. There was just something in me, a gut feeling, that pushed me towards acting. I have to thank my mom for seeing my interest in this – she would encourage me to perform from a young age, even if it was just in my family’s living room. I also thank my fourth-grade elementary school teacher for encouraging me to audition for the school’s production of the Wizard of Oz. Playing Dorothy was the first time I ever acted onstage and doing so transformed my childhood desire to act and perform into a life-long passion. Feeling that thrill for the first time, the electricity of expressing oneself with such playfulness and vulnerability, is something that inspires me to this day. I thank the little girl in me that took a chance on that elementary school audition – she’s the reason why I’m still acting today.
And just like many artists from underrepresented groups, I craved to see myself represented on North American stages, TV shows and films. I am grateful to have grown-up in a household where being Filipina was celebrated and watching Filipin*[JM1] teleseryes and movies with my family was a way to connect to my culture. Seeing Filipinos on the screen in that way also inspired me to pursue acting. To bring my whole self – who I am and where I am from – to the craft of acting with pride and joy.
What is your dream role?
I would love to be a lead in an indie rom-com or to be a dramatic lead in anything produced by A24, HBO and any Canadian equivalent – that would be so much fun (I do have a soft spot for indie films)! Though, my dream role would be any role that allows me to show my vulnerability and explore the depths of who I am. A role that would challenge me in the best ways, one that would allow me to express myself to the fullest and push the boundaries of my craft. Be it drama, comedy, everything in between, every role is a dream!
